Sometimes known as driveshafts, they are of two different lengths, short type being up to 1973, and the long type thereafter.
When reconditioning driveshafts, there are some basic things that must be checked:
- Check the shaft for straightness.
- Check the flange is not bent.
- Check the bearing surface for pitting.
- Check the yoke for a loose universal of a loose spline.
- When assembling the bearing housing, use Loctite 609 to fix the bearing to the housing, otherwise the bearing will rattle.
- Do not over-lubricate, as it is possible for he grease to get into the breaks.
- Lastly, be careful assembling the trunion kit. Contrary to popular belief, it is better for the spacer tube to be slightly loose, rather than tight.
